Buying Electric Guitars and Amps Separately or in a Pack
Once you have decided that you will buy an electric guitar for your child, you have to be aware that you will need other items. An electric guitar on its own is nearly useless without an amplifier to actually play the sound. The guitar is plugged into the amplifier, or amp for short, and the sound is magnified and played out of a speaker built into the amplifier. Now the sound does not come out of the guitar itself, but out of the amplifier.
Of course you could buy the guitar by itself or you can buy the two together as a package. The main benefit to buying a guitar separately from an amplifier would be that you get to choose the exact guitar and amplifier that you want, without having to buy what comes in the package. A package may come with the guitar that you want, but with an amplifier that does not meet your needs or is not of the quality that you are looking for. For some musicians, this might be an issue as they may need certain features in each piece.
If you do decide to buy the guitar and the amplifier together, the main benefit to doing this would be the savings. Often times retailers and even manufacturers pair together an electric guitar and amplifier together and offer a discount by buying this way. This again can be a good thing, but can also have its downside as well. Many times as new guitars and amplifiers come on the market, a retailer or manufacturer is left with a number of older models which may now be harder to sell, when compared to a newer model. This is similar to what car dealers do with previous years models; They discount them to make way for the newest models. With guitars, a retailer may take a guitar and amplifier and put them together into a package and offer a special price as a means of selling this product. This is an attractive way to purchase since it will save you money and everyone loves a good deal.
For beginners, an electric guitar and amplifier package will do the job just fine and get your started. There’s no need to have the same equipment as your favorite rock star if you can’t even play at all. A good children’s electric guitar and amplifier can usually be purchased as a package for less than $100 through an online store. Your first priority should be learning to play the instrument to the best of your ability. Once you know a little more about the instruments and the subtle details and differences between the various amplifiers, then you will be in a better position to purchase individual components. As your child’s skill increases and they are showing some potential, you may then want to purchase a guitar and amplifier separately, especially if your child will be playing in public in a band where better quality instruments will make a difference.
