The first thing you notice when it comes to buying a child electric guitar is that they are considerably smaller than full size ones. This will help to ensure that the child can play the instrument guitar as they do not have to stretch themselves to reach the strings and frets easily.

But you need to be aware that some of the electric guitars for children today are not all they are cracked up to be. When searching for such an instrument for your children as well as searching for children’s electric guitars also look for short scale guitars as this is what they are also known as.

By purchasing this type of instrument for your child you are ensuring that they are learning the proper way to play this instrument. This will then ensure that they find handling the electric guitar you have purchased for them much easier.

So why should you purchase a children’s electric guitar rather than a full size model for your child?

Firstly the neck of these guitars is far shorter than a traditional full size model which means the frets of it are closer together. With the frets being closer together a child even a small one will find it much easier to reach the chords when they are playing the instrument.

But not only does it make it easier for them to reach the chords they will also find that holding the strings down is much easier. By not having too place too much strain on their body as they try to reach the notes they find that they can apply more pressure and so helps to improve the sound they create as they play.

So what should one do before you actually go out and spend money on an electric guitar for your child? Below we offer a few tips that you may find helpful and which and help you decide which electric guitar is best for your son or daughter.

Tip 1 – Many children will often take up an instrument for a while but soon become bored with spending hours practicing. It is a good idea therefore to consider purchasing a used rather than new electric guitar for your child. If you do intend to purchase a used instrument then make sure that you check it over thoroughly for any damage as this could affect the sound the guitar makes.

Tip 2 – Don’t be afraid to let your child try the instrument out before you make a purchase. Not only can you see if the childs electric guitar is the right size for them but also how good the sound quality of the instrument is. If you are not sure about how the instrument should sound then arrange to get someone who can play the instrument to come along and try it out for you.

There are many reasons why your child has asked that they be allowed to learn how to play a guitar. For some children they find learning to play such an instrument helps to improve their self confidence. Whilst for others they find that childrens guitars don’t carry the same sort of stigma if a child were learning how to play the piano or violin.

Although many children will initially learn to play an acoustic guitar some prefer to be able to play an electric guitar instead. The main advantage to allowing your child to play this instrument over many others is that they come in sizes that are suitable for children. The main problem with most other instruments that a child can learn to play is that they are specifically designed to be played by a full grown adult.

But as well as children’s guitars coming in several different sizes they tend to cost considerably less than other instruments. Plus actually transporting your child and their instrument to their lessons is relatively easy as well.

When it comes to buying a guitar for your child there are several factors that you need to take into consideration. By keeping the following pointers in mind you will find that you are going to be a lot less overwhelmed by the variety of guitars available.

Point 1 – Think about how your child treats other things that belong to them. This is a very important consideration because if you have a child who does not treat items they have well then why spend lots of money on a guitar they are going to ruin. It would be wiser instead to spend less on the instrument even consider buying a used one and see how they take care of it. Should you find that not only do they develop a passion for playing their guitar and so look after it properly you can at a later date upgrade to a better quality more expensive guitar for them.

Point 2 –When you are going out to look at and possibly purchase a guitar for your child then take them with you. This will allow them to try the instrument out and see if it is too large or too small for them. Certainly when it comes to buying your childs first guitar you would be best off visiting a store selling musical instruments. In many cases the staff employed will have much more knowledge and can help to ensure that you purchase the right size instrument for your child.

Point 3 – Although your child may be clamouring for an electric guitar initially when they are learning to play such an instrument then you should purchase acoustic childrens guitars for them. They will find when learning how to play an acoustic guitar it is much simpler and provides a great basis for them to then learn other kinds of guitars.

When thinking of buying a children’s electric guitar for your son or daughter there are certain things which need to be taken into consideration beforehand. In this article we offer some advice that you may find useful in helping to purchase the right sort of electric guitar for your child.

Guitar Body Style – As you will soon discover when it comes to a children’s electric guitar there are three basic styles to choose from. There is the solid, semi hollow (semi solid) or hollow body types to choose from.

For those children who are looking for guitars that provide sustained loud amplification and allows them to create lots of effects when playing. Then the solid body type of guitar is the one to choose. Whilst if the budding guitarist is looking for an instrument that has high levels of amplification but has a more acoustic sound then the semi hollow type of electric guitar should be considered. Although the hollow bodied electric guitar is going to provide a good acoustic sound unfortunately this type is prone to producing lots of feedback when the levels of amplification are high.

Guitar Neck – The kind of neck your children’s electric guitar comes with will be dependent on how big their hands are. The only way to determine whether a c-shaped, thin or wide thin neck of a guitar is right for your child is by letting them try them out.

Along with deciding on what shape the neck should be you must also take into consideration whether to choose a set or bolt on neck. Some people would recommend that for a child a set neck is far better as it is more durable. However, you need to be aware that certain guitars such as the Fender Stratocaster only come with a bolt on neck, whilst the Gibson Les Paul electric guitars come with the set neck only.

Number Of Frets – In most cases the electric guitars one can purchase today come with just 22 frets, but there are some which have 24 frets on their necks. For a child who is just starting to play this particular instrument the one’s with only 22 frets are best. They can the progress to those with 24 frets as their playing improves and so that they play their instrument in the higher register.

Guitar Bridge – What style of bridge your children’s electric guitar comes with is dependent on the style of music that they would like to play. For those who want to play more metal style music then the need a guitar with a tremolo bridge or whammy bar. This allows the player to bend the strings all at once but they need to be wary as this can cause the strings to be thrown out of tune.

Certainly for children just learning to play this instrument going for a children’s electric guitar with a stop tail bridge is best. As these are fixed in to the body of the guitar they are far more stable and so the chances of the string being thrown out of tune is reduced.

Once you have decided that you will buy an electric guitar for your child, you have to be aware that you will need other items. An electric guitar on its own is nearly useless without an amplifier to actually play the sound. The guitar is plugged into the amplifier, or amp for short, and the sound is magnified and played out of a speaker built into the amplifier. Now the sound does not come out of the guitar itself, but out of the amplifier.

Of course you could buy the guitar by itself or you can buy the two together as a package. The main benefit to buying a guitar separately from an amplifier would be that you get to choose the exact guitar and amplifier that you want, without having to buy what comes in the package. A package may come with the guitar that you want, but with an amplifier that does not meet your needs or is not of the quality that you are looking for. For some musicians, this might be an issue as they may need certain features in each piece.

If you do decide to buy the guitar and the amplifier together, the main benefit to doing this would be the savings. Often times retailers and even manufacturers pair together an electric guitar and amplifier together and offer a discount by buying this way. This again can be a good thing, but can also have its downside as well. Many times as new guitars and amplifiers come on the market, a retailer or manufacturer is left with a number of older models which may now be harder to sell, when compared to a newer model. This is similar to what car dealers do with previous years models; They discount them to make way for the newest models. With guitars, a retailer may take a guitar and amplifier and put them together into a package and offer a special price as a means of selling this product. This is an attractive way to purchase since it will save you money and everyone loves a good deal.

For beginners, an electric guitar and amplifier package will do the job just fine and get your started. There’s no need to have the same equipment as your favorite rock star if you can’t even play at all. A good children’s electric guitar and amplifier can usually be purchased as a package for less than $100 through an online store. Your first priority should be learning to play the instrument to the best of your ability. Once you know a little more about the instruments and the subtle details and differences between the various amplifiers, then you will be in a better position to purchase individual components. As your child’s skill increases and they are showing some potential, you may then want to purchase a guitar and amplifier separately, especially if your child will be playing in public in a band where better quality instruments will make a difference.

Setting out to purchase an electric guitar for your child can be a confusing and overwhelming task. With so many different options and features available, how do you know what to buy? You might consider buying an electric guitar starter kit for your child that comes complete with amplifier, pick, cable, strap and sometimes even a guitar case.

We’ve decided to feature 3 popular children’s electric guitars and compare them to one another.

Disney Washburn Hannah Montana Electric Guitar

The first of the three children’s electric guitars in the list is the [nmslink:Disney's Hannah Montana electric guitar,Hannah Montana electric guitar]. If you have a child or young teen you certainly know who Hannah Montana is. This young woman has made quite a wave in the children’s TV and music scene and your child would love to have this guitar. It’s a ¾ size guitar made just for beginners and has some features like star shaped fretboard inlays that make it star quality for your young rock star! There’s a 3 way switch with tone and volume knobs and a pick guard. It comes with a hardwood body that comes in four colors to choose from and best of all, it comes with a lifetime warranty.

[nms:hannah montana guitar,2,0,10]

Kona Electric Guitar

The Kona is a ½ size electric guitar made especially for children. It comes equipped with an Alder body, Rosewood fingerboard and 6 chrome covered die cast steel tuners. There’s 1 volume knob, 1 tone and 1 coil tapping mini switch. As for the warranty, you will get a 10 year limited warranty so it will last long past the time frame that your child will be playing this one. This great little guitar will help your child get a start at playing guitar and is often paired with a Kona amplifier, all for less than $200.

[nms:kona electric guitar,2,0,10]

J Reynolds Mini-Strat Electric Guitar

For the truly budget conscious, the J Reynolds Mini Childs Electric guitar pack is perfect. At less than $100, including a 10 watt amplifier, this will get your child started without emptying your wallet. This is a ½ size guitar and is perfect for kids age 5 and older. The guitar has 21 frets, one humbucker, as well as a volume control and a tone control. If you don’t want to listen to your child practicing, the amplifier comes with a headphone jack so they can practice and you can keep your sanity! The great thing about this package is that it comes with everything that your child will need to get started including the electric guitar, amplifier, pick, guitar cable and strap.

Children’s electric guitars tend to be scaled down versions of the full size models played by adults. Normally these guitars will be either half or three quarters the size and not only will children find them easy to play and also people with small hands.

Although children’s electric guitars are smaller in size they still have the same strings, notes and chords on them as the full sized ones. So when it comes time for your child to progress on to the full sized adult electric guitars available they won’t have a problem.

Because of their size a child will have no problems holding these instruments and won’t find that they need to stretch their fingers far in order to play the chords. Certainly if you are going to buy your child an instrument this Christmas to get them involved in music you cannot go far wrong with buying them one of the many children’s electric guitars now available.

You will be amazed when you start looking at electric guitars for a child just how many different makes and styles are available. Today even the best quality guitars created for adults now produce a range for children including the likes of Gibson, Fender and Dean. Certainly two of the best electric guitars to consider for young children wanting to learn this instrument are as follows:-

1. [nmslink:Fender Squier Mini Strat, Fender Squier Mini Strat]– This is a 22.75 inch scale model of the Fender Squier Affinity Mini Strat and has a double cutaway body, a fingerboard made from rosewood and a maple neck. It also has 20 frets, 5 way switching along with 3 single coil pickups, 6 saddle hard tail bridge and single ply white pick guard. Plus there are both master volume and tone controls on this particular children’s electric guitar. This particular guitar is one suitable for children with small hands and on average you can expect to spend around $100. However, for this price you still are getting a good quality beginner’s electric guitar.

2. [nmslink:ibanez mikro,Ibanez CRGM21 GIO Mikro] – This one tends to cost slightly more than the first one we mention in this article at about $130. It comes in wide array of colors including Apple Candy Red, Black Night, Jewel Blue and White. This is a 22.2 inch scale model of other guitars made by Ibanez and has a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard as the Fender Squier does. But instead of 20 frets this has 24 the body is made from alder and again has a hard tail bridge but hum bucking pickups along with a dual power sound. Not only is this electric guitar suitable for children just starting to play this instrument. It is also suitable for people who are more accomplished at playing the electric guitar but want a smaller sized one.

Along with the two children’s electric guitars mentioned above there are plenty of others worth considering. A quick search online and you will be amazed at how many are now available and all are reasonably affordable.
